In India, a lot of people don’t give bother much about traffic rules and road safety. Sometimes on Indian roads, it is quite difficult to navigate through potholes, rash drivers and what not. In addition for most of us, the knowledge of traffic rules begins and ends with those red, yellow and green lights. But have you ever noticed those white and yellow lines on the roads? If you observe closely there are different patterns to those lines – some of the lines are broken while the others are solid, while some are white the others are yellow. These lines are associated with traffic rules and here’s what these lines mean.

Broken White Lines

Broken white lines on the roads indicate that you may change the lane if it is safe to do so.

Solid white lines on the roads indicate that you cannot change lanes and should drive/ride on the lane you are already on.

The broken yellow line on the roads indicates that passing is allowed but keeping safety in mind.

The solid yellow line on the roads indicates that passing other vehicle is allowed but you cannot pass through the solid yellow line.

Double Solid Yellow Lines indicate that no passing is allowed.

Solid yellow line with broken yellow line on the roads indicates that if you are driving or riding on the side of the broken line you can overtake and if you are on the side of the solid line you are not allowed to do so.
