Ardent fans of Samantha Ruth Prabhu looked forward to the release of her much-anticipated mythological, fantasy drama 'Shaakuntalam'. However, following mixed reactions by the critics, most of them weighing on the negative perspective, it has not translated to favourable numbers at the box-office. As of Day 2, the box-office collections across the three languages it was released in, stands at Rs. 5 crores.
While Telugu-speaking states saw a meagre 20.59% occupancy, the Hindi speaking states saw a dismal footfall at just 8.35%. Considering most states were celebrating the New Year, could have proven to be a major factor that contributed to less ticket sales at the box-office. Inspired by Kalidasa's play 'Abhignyana Shakuntalam', 'Shaakuntalam' also stars Dev Mohan, Sachin Khedekar, Prakash Raj, Mohan Babu, Aditi Balan, Madhoo, Jisshu Sengupta, and Allu Arha.
While critics and fans alike Samantha's performance and appearance in the film, the film was criticised overall for being too theatrical and unintentionally comical. Even the visual effects and the Hindi subtitles of the film were called out for being absolute cringe.
'Shaakuntalam' is based on the star-crossed romance between Shakuntala and King Dushyant that is put to test when sage Durvasa Muni curses it. Directed by National Award-winning director Gunasekhar, the film has been produced by Gunaa Teamworks and Sri Venkateswara Creations.
