Thane: The Hill line police in Ulhasnagar have arrested an 85-year-old man for assaulting his wife. The incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media alerting the police to take action.
The video clearly shows how the woman was assaulted with a bucket by her husband.
The police started investigating the case from the video to trace the man in a village in Ambarnath. The police team then reached the spiritual guru Gajanan Maharaj Chikankar and questioned him.
He confirmed about the video informing that he assaulted her on May 31. The police found the video was shot by Chikankar's grandson to show it to her aunt, as to how Gajanan was assaulting his wife Bhagirti (85).
"We questioned Bhagirti and found the dispute was internal which happend over filling water. She refused to file any complaint against her husband. Similarly, the family members were not ready to file any complaint," said a police officer.
The police on the ground of the video clip themselves filed a complaint. The Hill line police have registered a case under section 324, 323, 504 and 506 of the Indian penal code.
"We have registered a case and have arrested the accused who is in police custody. He will be produced in court on Tuesday," said Mohan Khandare, senior police inspector, Hill line police station.
