Dombivali: In a shocking incident, due to water scarcity in Desle Pada area of Dombivali, five members of a family lost their lives.
The five members - two women and three children reportedly drowned in a water-filled quarry where they had gone to wash clothes.
The incident took place at 4 pm on Saturday, May 7 and the fire brigade and police officials reached the spot after getting the information about it from eyewitnesses.
Speaking with the FPJ Correspondent J.D.More, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Manpada Police Station, Dombivali said, " The wife, daughter-in-law and three children of Suresh Gaikwad a sarpanch and police patil of Desle Pada area in Dombivali (East) went to wash clothes in a water-filled quarry at Sandap village around 4 pm. When Suresh Gaikwad's wife Meera Gaikwad (55) was washing clothes along with her daughter-in-law Apeksha Gaikwad (30), one of the children slipped and fell into the water. Both Meera and Apeksha jumped into the water to save the child but in an attempt they all drowned."
More further added, "We got information from the eye witness that there was water scarcity in the areas like Desle Pada and Bhopar and the residents from these areas used to go to the water-filled quarry nearby to wash their clothes. Also, on Saturday, May 7 there was water cut in the area so the victims went to wash the clothes from water-quarry."
One of the local residents from the spot where the incident took place on the condition of anonymity informed that, " When Meera and her daughter-in-law jumped in the water-filled quarry to save the child there were no others around to check them and thus the five members of the family drowned."
The five family members have been identified as Meera Gaikwad (55), Apeksha Gaikwad (30), Mayuresh Gaikwad (14), Moksha Gaikwad (13) and Siddhesh Gaikwad (14).
All of them were fished out by the fire brigade team and were brought to a hospital, where they were declared on arrival.
