Mumbai: Defending its aggressive enforcement drive, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated official data show that the majority of food establishments inspected across the state complied with food safety norms. Since IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe took charge as FDA Commissioner on May 25, 2026, the department inspected 3,137 food establishments, of which 2,373 (75.6%) did not require any corrective action.
Improvement notices were issued to 764 establishments (24.4%), while only 165 establishments (5.3% of all those inspected) faced licence suspension for serious violations.
The figures, covering the period between May 25 and July 31, reflect one of the state's largest food safety enforcement drives in recent years. During the period, the FDA seized 28,66,096 kg of food products worth Rs 55.72 crore.
The hospitality sector remained a key focus of the inspections. The FDA inspected 890 hotels, restaurants and dhabas, accounting for 28.4% of all inspections carried out during the period. Of these, 561 establishments (63%) were found compliant, while 329 (37%) were issued improvement notices. A total of 116 licences (13% of those inspected) were suspended after officials found serious violations of food safety and hygiene norms.
The department also intensified its crackdown on prohibited food products. It found 658 establishments stocking banned food items and seized prohibited products worth ₹15.11 crore. The enforcement drive resulted in the registration of 599 FIRs, the arrest of 701 persons, the sealing of 407 establishments, and the seizure of 78 vehicles valued at ₹6.60 crore.
The campaign witnessed action against several prominent establishments. The FDA suspended the food business licences of the Cricket Club of India (CCI) and the Wellington Sports Club after inspections revealed serious food safety and hygiene deficiencies. It also suspended the licence of Rustic Ideas, a Vikhroli-based central kitchen supplying meals to more than 3,000 schoolchildren, after inspectors found lapses in food handling and hygiene practices.
FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said the department would continue its zero-tolerance approach against food adulteration, unhygienic food handling and the sale of unsafe or prohibited food products.
