Mumbai : With the Dahisar River beautification project being kickstarted with renewed vigour, two check dams will be built on the river in the portion inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, for controlling the flow of water, and subsequently to prevent soil erosion.
At present, the national park has two check dams and this project will construct two additional ones.
MLA Manisha Chaudhary, who has been closely associated with the cause of Dahisar river beautification, said: “This is part of a larger project which includes cleaning of the Dahisar river water, river beautification, widening the river bank and creating options for recreation facilities such as boating and kayaking [within SGNP].”
Chaudhary also said that after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a review meeting and decided to fast forward the Dahisar River beautification project, much work has been completed on this front. The total cost is expected to be around Rs 300 crore. Chaudhary informed that the work of constructing check dams is expected to completed by 2018 or early 2019.
Once the check dams are completed, water flow out of SGNP can be controlled; hence soil erosion will be controlled to a great extent. This will also mean that the portion of the river lying outside the SGNP will become less filthy.
As the Dahisar River flows out of SGNP with tremendous velocity, it carries soil with it, making the river water murky. The eroded soil further stagnates water.
