Former Congress MLA and AICC Secretary Mainul Haque resigned from his post on Tuesday. He will join Trinamool Congress (TMC) on September 23 in presence of TMC national secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Haque, an MLA from Farakka in Murshidabad district, submitted his resignation from primary membership of Indian National Congress and announced that he would join the TMC on September 23.
In his resignation letter sent to interim party chief Sonia Gandhi, he wrote: "I respectfully convey that I hereby submit my resignation from the post of Secretary, All India Congress Committee."
According to a close aide of Mainul Haque, he had mailed his resignation to both Congress national chief Sonia Gandhi and West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
According to Chowdhury he is not bothered who is leaving the party or who is continuing with Congress.
According to Congress sources, Mainul's resignation is not a surprise for them.
“Mainul had long back after losing the poll had shown his interest in defection so it is not a new development,” said the Congress sources.
Notably, Manirul Haque has been five times Congress MLA from Farakka in Murshidabad district.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that Manirul is defecting to the ruling Trinamool Congress just to hide his ‘malpractices’.
“Coal, sand, bricks, pebbles passes through Farakka to other states and the former MLAs inclusion in the TMC will help him to continue his malpractice,” said Suvendu.
