Amid heavy rainfall, a portion of the canopy at Gujarat's Rajkot Airport collapsed on Saturday.
This is the third incident in the last three days where a portion of an airport canopy has collapsed in the country.
Early Friday morning, heavy rains led to a canopy collapse at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, injuring six individuals who were subsequently rescued and hospitalized, as reported by Delhi Fire Services.
Before this, late Thursday night, a portion of the canopy at Dumna Airport in Jabalpur fell on a car. In this incident, no person was injured, and the car belonged to an Income Tax official.
Hours after the Jabalpur airport incident, a portion of the canopy at Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport on Friday collapsed on vehicles parked underneath it. According to reports, six people sustained injuries in the incident, and a car driver lost his life as the portion fell on the car in which he was sitting.
After the incident, several flights scheduled for departure from Terminal 1 were canceled, and operations were later suspended at Terminal 1.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced on Saturday that operations at Terminal 1 will remain suspended until further notice. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, including those by IndiGo and SpiceJet. All operations have been temporarily shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.
Opposition Attacks Government On Collapse Incidents
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale launched a fresh attack on the NDA-ruled Centre. Sharing a news snippet on X, Gokhale wrote, "After Jabalpur and Delhi, a roof canopy collapses at a third airport - Rajkot - in just one week. All hastily inaugurated projects for the 2024 elections. Wonder who the BJP will blame this time. Everything inaugurated by Modi in the last 6 months must be checked for safety."
