Chennai: Nalini Sriharan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, left the Vellore jail on Wednesday to attend her father’s last rites in Chennai. She was escorted by ten cops.
Nalini, was granted parole yesterday for 12 hours, to attend her father’s funeral, who died in Tirunelvelli. According to the parole condition, Nalini will have to report back in Vellore prison before 8 p.m. today.
Nalini and three others, including her husband Murugan, were originally awarded the death sentence after they were convicted for their role in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and have been behind the bars for the last 25 years.
Nalini’s death sentence was commuted to life in 2000. The death sentence of the other three was also commuted by the Supreme Court a few years ago citing inordinate delay in disposing their mercy pleas.
