Ratnaa Sinha, who made her Bollywood directorial debut with the film Shaadi Main Zaroor Aana, is back with another offering. Titled Middle Class Love, the movie stars Prit Kamani, Kavya Thapar, Eisha Singh, and Manoj Pahwa. In an exclusive chat with The Free Press Journal, Ratnaa opens up about the movie, her process as a director, and more.
When asked about the process of creating a story like this in the current scenario where friendship and love dramas have been done to death, she shares, “For one, friendship and love can never be dated or done to death. Each generation experiences it in their own way. So, a love story or a friendship story well told will always be enjoyed. Middle Class Love as the name itself suggests, is a story that revolves around the middle class. Love has no class; it transcends every class. What is life without love and friends? This film celebrates love, friendship, and family.”
Spilling the beans on casting lead actor Prit Kamani, Ratnaa reveals, “Casting for a film like this is a lengthy process. We auditioned about 500 people and selected the top three. We had a difficult time deciding because performing a scene in an audition is different from performing in the entire movie. The burden of an audition is different from that of a film on a single person. This film is primarily about a boy’s journey and I thought Prit was ideal. His acting abilities are exceptional and he is also extremely intelligent.”
A still from Middle Class Love
Middle Class Love is an unusual title for a Hindi film, on this, she elaborates, “The title credit goes entirely to Anubhav (Sinha). His movies have appropriate titles as his thought process for his titles is flawless. More than these two new girls and this boy, falling in love is depicted in the movie. It’s about having the support of the middle class family on your side when you’re in need.”
On the parting note, she explains how she maintains consistency in making socially-relevant films. “I believe films communicate a lot and through entertainment you can convey a message. 3 Idiots is a prime example. Much was said without being said. It has established a new standard, but my film also says something with more entertainment, dance, and singing,” she concludes.
