Bollywood filmmaker Rohit Shetty recently stated that actor Govinda would have been the biggest superstar in the country had he gotten his fair due during the 90s.

Shetty mentioned how Govinda, along with director David Dhawan, delivered back-to-back hits for 10 straight years.

Shetty is currently busy with the promotions of his upcoming film 'Cirkus'. During one of the promotional interviews with Pinkvilla, he was asked to name the highest-grossing film of 1993, to which he promptly replied, "Aankhein", that starred Govinda and Chunky Pandey in the lead.

He then went on to shower praise on Govinda and said, "For 10 years, that guy gave blockbusters. He and David Dhawan gave Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhen, Raja Babu, Jodi No 1, Coolie No 1, and Haseena Maan Jaayegi, that was back-to-back."

"I think he didn't get his due otherwise he would have been the biggest superstar. Ab social media hai, ek chalti hai toh sab chillate hai. Back-to-back for ten years both had given hits," Shetty added.

Govinda's professional front

In his career spanning over 25 years, Govinda has starred in more than 165 films, and has won several awards and accolades for his varied characters. He carved a niche for himself with his spectacular comic timing and unique dancing skills.

While Govinda had started out as an action hero with the 1986 film 'Ilzaam', he went on to play the lead in numerous commercially successful comedy films, most of them with David Dhawan.

Recently, Govinda was seen as one of the judges in the dance reality show 'Dance Bangla Dance'.

About 'Cirkus'

Meanwhile, Rohit Shetty is all set to present a stellar star cast with his upcoming entertainer 'Cirkus'. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Sharma, Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra among others.

The film is set to hit the silver screens on December 23.
