Bhopal: Archeological survey of India (ASI) has initiated the process of restoring the lost glory of famous Bhojpur temple. Situated 28 km away from state capital in Raisen district, the temple stands next to a deep gorge through which river Betwa flows.
ASI has commenced the conservation and restoration of the temple which is losing its lustre owing to slow decay over a period of time. The conservationists are employing traditional methods to restore the old structure, which have stood the test of time. The temple of historical, archaeological and religious interest attracts a good number of tourists round the year.
During festivals like Mahashivratri and Makarsankranti, the number of devotees grows manifold. ASI is constructing ramps at the temple to ensure hassle-free entry and exit during rush days. The ramps will also prove beneficial physically challenged persons visiting the temple as they find it difficult to climb the stairs . The restoration process is likely be completed by year end. The stones and bricks in the temple which are ruined over a period of time are to be shifted to their original location for which the ASI has ensured all the preparations.
The challenge before the AIS is to ensure that the age old structure does not lose its character and old charm during the restoration and conservation. ASI is taking care not to use any modern technique in restoration as while developing the ramps, the conservationists have placed one boulders over the other and bonded it using lime, jaggery and other organic material, used originally. Similar technique is also being employed in restore the boundary wall, the boulders of which have fallen apart.
Archeological assistant Vijay Sharma said that the ramp which is developed around the temple to help pilgrims and ensure easy exit during festivals. He said that boundary walls around the temple will also be restored to ensure that temple gains its original look.
