Mumbai Dahi Handi: City’s first Govinda fatality reported as Sandesh Dalvi from Kurla succumbs to injuries
Dalvi was a part of Shiv Shambho Govinda Pathak.
Sandesh Dalvi, a 24-year-old resident of Kurla (West), became the first govinda to lose his life in Mumbai this year. He died at the Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital in Vile Parle late on Monday evening.
Dalvi, a member of the Shiv Shambho Govinda Pathak from Chemburkar Wadi, Vile Parle (East), was admitted to hospital with serious injuries on Aug 19 after he and friend Vinay Rambade came crashing down while trying to set up a sixlayer human pyramid.
The group was trying to set up the pyramid at an event organised by Riyaz Shaikh, 36, a local leader of the Nationalist Congress Party in Bamanwada, Andheri (East). Dalvi was on the fifth layer of the pyramid while Rambade was on the fourth. Both suffered head injuries in the fall and began bleeding from the ears and nose.
Rambade fell unconscious. A doctor said the duo was first rushed to the Babasaheb Gawde Hospital in Vile Parle and later shifted to the civic-run RN Cooper Hospital. Dalvi was shifted to the Nanavati hospital on Sunday by his family after getting him discharged from Cooper hospital against medical advice.
At Nanavati hospital, he underwent emergency surgery but died at 9pm on Monday. Rambade, a resident of Vile Parle,is still atthe Cooper hospital. Dalvi’s family and friends blamed the lack of adequate safety measures for their loss.
Police had earlier lodged a case of negligence against the event organiser. Following Dalvi’s death, they have added a charge of causing death by negligence (section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code) and causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life (section 338) to the FIR.
