Mumbai News: Kalyan Station Yard Undergoes Remodelling In A Bid To Segregate Platforms For Local And Long-Distance Trains
Kalyan station is a critical junction handling nearly 750 trains every day.
Mumbai: The Central Railway accelerates the work of Kalyan station yard remodeling project for the improvement of for train punctuality. The multi-phase project aimed to segregate the operation of local trains and long-distance trains to enhance the efficiency.
General Manager of Central Railway, Naresh Lalwani, along with Divisional Railway Manager Rajnish Kumar Goyal, personally visited the site on Wednesday to review the progress. "Re-modelling of the Kalyan yard work is now in full swing. It will not only help improve the punctuality of trains but also segregate the operation of long-distance and local trains," stated a Central Railway official.
" The initiative aims to save operational time and bolster punctuality for both local and long-distance trains. Kalyan station, currently a critical junction handling approximately 750 trains daily, is poised for a transformation that will segregate the operation of these two categories of trains . Currently both types ( local and long distance) of trains being handled on same platforms" said an official of CR.
Project costs a whopping ₹866 crore
"The extensive remodeling project will provide separate platforms for local trains, a much-needed upgrade for a station of such high traffic volume. Kalyan station is a convergence point for trains from both the North East and South East parts of India. Currently, the station's layout causes crossovers and joint usage, impacting the punctuality of suburban local trains" further added officials.
According to CR, the project includes the construction of four new platforms, foot overbridges, an elevated deck connecting to the existing Kalyan railway station. Estimated at ₹866 crore, this project is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3A and will be executed by the Central Railway in multiple phases.
Speaking about the project's status, an official mentioned, "Contracts have been awarded for various aspects of the project, including earthwork, minor bridges, miscellaneous civil works, and the relocation of affected service buildings and quarters." Notably, approximately 50% of the earthwork is already completed, and construction of service buildings is well underway. The dismantling of the old track of good yard is progressing, with about 90% of it already completed.
However, the official cautioned that this is a sizable project being carried out with minimal disruption to train operations, and the timeline for completion depends on the various factors . "The Kalyan yard remodeling project holds the promise of transforming this crucial railway junction, reducing congestion, and ultimately enhancing the overall efficiency of train services in the region" he said.
