Polling for the first phase of assembly elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh kicked off Thursday. As many as 623 candidates are in the fray and around 2.27 crore people are eligible to vote in this phase.

7.95% voter turnout recorded till 9:30 am
Uttar Pradesh recorded a voter turnout of 7.95 per cent till 9:30 am in the first phase of Assembly elections on Thursday.
According to the Election Commission, the Mathura assembly seat recorded 8.23 per cent voter turnout, in Agra 7.64 per cent while 8.93 per cent turnout is recorded from the Bagpat seat. Aligarh seat witnessed a voter turnout of 8.39 per cent whereas the Gautam Buddha Nagar reported an 8.07 per cent turnout.

Voters reached the polling booths in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh city to cast their votes amid foggy and cold weather on Thursday morning.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday said the people of Uttar Pradesh should vote on issues of unemployment, inflation, poverty, crime against women and Dalits.
Phase I of the polling for the Uttar Pradesh assembly on Thursday saw 48.24 per cent voting till 3 p.m., according to the Election Commission of India. "Phase I has seen 48.24 per cent polling till 3 p.m.," said the ECI statement along with a disclaimer that these are approximate figures as data from some polling stations takes time to be incorporated.
Amid reports of technical snag in EVMs at some places, polling is going on peacefully in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday with an average of over 48 per cent votes being cast till 3 pm, Election Commission officials said.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday urged the Election Commission to take immediate action wherever there are allegations of EVM malfunctioning or slow polling in Uttar Pradesh. The first phase of polling, which started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm, is being held in 58 assembly seats spread across 11 districts in the western part of the state.
