Punjab Crime: Notorious Gangster Jassa Happowal Injured In Police Encounter (Watch)

Chandigarh: Notorious Gangster Karanjit Singh alias Jassa Happowal, an accused in at least six murder cases including the sensational double-murder of a mother and daughter, sustained bullet injuries on his both legs while unsuccessfully attempting to escape from the police custody in Zirakpur area, near here on Wednesday.

The police first fired in the air and then shot him in the leg. He has been captured in injured condition. He is reported to have been hit by six bullets. During this time an employee also got injured.

Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, said that Happowal, is one of the main shooters of the gang run by an absconding foreign-based gangster Rajesh Kumar alias Sonu Khatri and terrorist Harvinder Rinda. He was arrested by the counter intelligence (CI), Jalandhar, from the outskirts of Jalandhar on November 30.

Subsequently, Jassa was brought on a production warrant in a Metro Plaza firing case wherein he along with his two associates attempted to eliminate one person on August 21.

DGP Yadav said that following his disclosures, a police team was taking Happowal to the deserted built-up near Hotel Midtown in Peermuchalla area of Zirakpur town, district Mohali, where he claimed to have concealed a Chinese pistol suspected to be used in Metro firing incident.

“On reaching the location, the gangster tried to escape from the police custody after pushing down a police official, which led the police team to open fire to stop him from fleeing resulting in gunshot injuries,” he said and added that assistant sub-inspector Darshan Singh was also injured in averting his escape. Both have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, he added.

The DGP said that Police teams have successfully recovered one Chinese pistol along with five live cartridges. The incident was being investigated forensically and scientifically.
