Odisha train tragedy: Indian Railways launches helpline 139 to support victims as rescue ops continue
The accident has resulted in over 270 deaths, whereas around 1000 people have been injured.
Indian Railways has acted swiftly in response to the devastating train accident in Odisha by establishing dedicated arrangements through the helpline number 139. This initiative aims to provide crucial support to the families, friends, and relatives of the deceased, as well as stranded passengers affected by the incident.
Round-the-Clock Assistance
A team of senior officials has been appointed to handle helpline calls 24/7. Their tireless efforts will ensure the delivery of accurate and satisfactory information to distressed passengers and their loved ones during this challenging time. Coordinating with the respective Zonal Railways and the State Government, they will provide callers with all the necessary details.
The helpline service will play a vital role in facilitating the prompt distribution of the recently announced enhanced ex-gratia payments by the Minister of Railways. Under the revised compensation scheme, a sum of Rs. 10 lakh will be granted to the family of the deceased, Rs. 2 lakh for severe injuries, and Rs. 50,000 for minor injuries.
Disbursement of Ex-Gratia
Indian Railways has already disbursed Rs. 3.22 crores in ex-gratia payments, assisting 285 individuals affected by the tragedy. This amount includes compensation for 11 deaths, 50 cases of severe injuries, and 224 instances of minor injuries. The disbursement centers are located in Soro, Kharagpur, Balasore, Khantapara, Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar.
