J&K: Massive Protests At NIT Srinagar Against 'Inflammatory' Post On Prophet Muhammad By Hindu Student; Visuals Surface

Srinagar: Protests were held on Tuesday by local students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar city against an "inflammatory" social media post by a non-local Hindu student against Prophet Muhammad.

Local students of NIT locked both the entrances to the college and raised slogans against the social media post by a non-local student which, they said, has hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.

Accused student sent home

College authorities have sent the non-local student home on leave while the protesting students demanded stringent action against him by the authorities.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Professor Atiq-u-Rehman, Registrar of NIT Srinagar. He also added that the student did not take the current on-campus exam. Even today, the student was dismissed early, as reported by Greater Kashmir.

Student posted the video disseminated from US

"Someone in the United States sent him the video that he posted on Instagram. The situation has calmed down, and we promised to take appropriate action," the Registrar stated that an investigation is underway and recommendations will be implemented, noting that police had filed a case.

According to V K Birdi, Inspector General of Police for the Kashmir Zone, a case has been filed under the appropriate sections, and investigations are in progress. IGP Greater Kashmir stated, "We were informed that students at NIT Srinagar are agitating after some social media post hurting religious sentiments," and added that the Registrar had told them that steps were being taken.

Police contemplating action

The head of the Kashmir Police said that following receipt of a written document from the Registrar NIT, officers filed a case.

Police is trying to pacifying the protesting students while the college authorities said they are contemplating appropriate action against the non-local student.
