Students of JBMIS come away with lessons other than management from their visit to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

The first year students of the Master’s in Management Studies programme at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies had the unique opportunity to visit Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) museum as part of their Communication Skills curriculum. The activity was organised in coordination with the education department of the museum. Students were excited at the prospect of gaining knowledge about India’s rich culture and history. The students were seated in the newly built auditorium of the museum and given a brief overview of the history of the museum.

The students were then engaged in activities, to be carried out in groups of 10. Each group was given a topic on which they had to prepare and deliver a presentation. Each group was given two-and-a-half hours to visit the allotted galleries on which they had to make a presentation and come up with innovative ideas for the museum. The students had to make use of their creative faculties to come up with innovative solutions to a wide range of topics like – wear your art, museum digitisation techniques, selling the museum as a product , sculpture designing, travelogue and a television script as well. The time management and team work skills of the students were put to test. The batch of 2015 did not disappoint and came up with creative and ingenious ideas within the allocated time. After a short lunch break, the students assembled to present their ideas before the museum authorities.

The first group presented on topic ‘Wear you Art’ in which they showcased how abstract art could be used to complement the products which we use in day to day life like jewellery from artifacts, laptop covers and shirts from paintings, key chains from artifact replicas etc.

The tech-savvy students of JBIMS came up with numerous ideas like QR card, 3D kiosks and virtual reality to digitise the galleries in order to improve availability of information to visitors. One of the groups created a travelogue on the Harappan civilization which teleported the audience back in time to Harappa and drew parallels with the modern way of life. Another group put forth a script for a television show which would showcase the different weapons and strategies used in warfare during the Mughal and other eras.

After the presentations were wrapped up, the curators of the different galleries in the museum provided their feedback on the ideas put forth by the students. Subsequently, the director of the museum, Sabyasachi Mukherjee addressed the batch and provided valuable insights into what kept the museum ticking. The day long activity now drew to a close with the students leaving the museum with a deep sense of appreciation of their rich culture and heritage and having built on their communication skills.
