Feasibility study for the new suburban Virar- Vasai Road- Diva- Panvel line would soon begin in about a months time. Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation ( MRVC) would be carrying out the work under phase three of Mumb

ai Urban Transport Project ( MUTP).

” The feasibility study would be in two parts – practical and financial.

Study will also be conducted on the fast corridor on harbour line project. Both these projects collectively are estimated to cost about Rs 20,000 crores,” said a MRVC official on condition of anonymity.

” Virar- Vasai Road- Diva- Panvel, a 76- kilometer project would be convenient to make as there are less amenities on the route. It is better to get the facility in place before the population expands. The time to cover this distance keeping in mind the current number of stations would be about over an hour,” said another MRVC official on condition of anonymity.

Since Mumbai is already facing scarcity of space, people are venturing to Navi Mumbai. This project would greatly help the connectivity between the two cities. Instead of travelling till junction likes Kurla or Wadala direct commute can help decongestion at these stations and also help develop the area.

A line connecting these stations already exists; but it is for long distance trains.

Trains connecting Western Railway and Pune pass from this line.
