HC notice to NIA on bail applications of 2 IM men
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency was today asked by the Delhi High Court to file its response on the bail applications of two suspected operatives of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM), facing trial for their alleged involvement in hatching a conspiracy to carry out terror strikes in the country. A bench of Justices P K Bhasin and V P Vaish issued notice to NIA on the bail applications moved by suspected IM modules — Imran Khan and Syed Maqbool and sought reply by January 22. They were arrested in connection with various terror strikes carried out by the militant outfit across the country. The two accused has sought setting aside trial court’s September decision, which had dismissed their bail applications.
Bengal woman throws baby out of train, nabbed
new delhi: A woman was arrested Monday after she flung her year-old daughter out of a running train in West Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district. The baby battles for life in a hospital, police said. The incident occurred Monday morning near Naihati railway station, some 40 km from state capital Kolkata. The woman, Purnima Das, boarded a suburban train at Naihati. As the train pulled out of the station, she flung her baby out. Shocked co-passengers pulled the chain to stop the train, and handed the woman over to police. “The child has been hospitalised. Her condition is critical,” an officer of Naihati police station said. The woman claimed that her husband’s family had been torturing her ever since she gave birth to a girl, and she wanted to rid herself of her daughter. “Ever since I gave birth to a girl, my in-laws have been mentally and physically torturing me,” Das told police after her arrest.
Rahul reviews party functioning in West Bengal, Assam
kolkata: Rahul Gandhi on Monday reviewed the functioning of Congress in West Bengal and Assam at a time when the party is gearing up for the Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi held separate parleys with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and state PCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita and Bengal PCC head Pradip Bhattacharya. AICC General Secretary C P Joshi, who is incharge of both the states, was also present. While Congress is ruling in Assam, in West Bengal the party is in the opposition after partying ways with ruling Trinamool Congress last year. Congress and TMC had contested the last Lok Sabha polls together but fell out over several issues including the controversial matter of FDI in retail.
